Coast Guard Personnel -An Integral Part of The Albemarle Area

Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City opened in 1940 as a seaplane facility with only four officers and 52 enlisted personnel. Over the past 75 years, the Coast Guard’s presence in Elizabeth City has grown to include five major commands spread over the 822 acres located near Weeksville as well as other properties in the Elizabeth City area.

Real Estate – Make Your Move

With home sales on the rise, realtors and sellers have a lot to celebrate in the Albemarle area. The total sales in Camden for 2013 were $18,568,421. For the first nine months of 2014, sales were $17,824,733. With the average number of days on the market in Camden dropping from 172 to 160, 2014 was on track to exceed last year’s sales.

Culture – The Art of Having Fun

Center Players bring fun and national recognition to the arts in Elizabeth City. Elizabeth City has never met a group who understood the “art of having fun” as much as the Arts of the Albemarle’s Center Players. Not only do they have fun, but this talented group of students earned national recognition at the Junior Theatre Festival (JTF) in Atlanta, GA, in January 2014.

Education – Smart Town, Safe Town

Elizabeth City and Camden, NC are known for many things: our Southern hospitality, the U.S. Coast Guard base, the ever-popular Potato Festival, and more. Now there are new academic credentials to add to the list: high-technology approaches for keeping our school-aged children safe and a progressive and rigorous, experience- based secondary education program.

Milestones – Building Upon History

“If you owned a business in the olden days, you worked hard and did well,” says Curtis Chambers, co-owner of Elizabeth City Brick Company. “Today, working hard ain’t hardly enough anymore.” The recent economic downturn hit the company hard, but they are reversing the trend and coming out of the slump.

Shopping – Under One Roof

Retailers and downtown businesses experiment with new startup models to encourage entrepreneurs and utilize prime real estate  – all while reducing the risks and costs for new companies.

“The people are incredibly cordial to you. Everyone is not simply out for themselves here; they hold doors open and will thank you if you do the same for them.”
